Parts and Memory Therapy

We all have different parts of ourselves that show up in different situations. You may notice that you respond one way with your spouse, another way with your children, and differently with friends or coworkers. These are different parts of you that can have their own thoughts, feelings, and ways of responding.

Sometimes, a part of you can become connected to a difficult or painful memory. When something reminds you of that experience, that part may become activated. You may feel anxious, angry, afraid, overwhelmed, or have a reaction that seems stronger than the situation calls for.

In Parts and Memory Therapy, we identify the problem you are experiencing and connect with the part of you that is connected to the memory behind it. We then work with that part and the memory to help reduce the distress associated with it.

For example, you may know that something happened a long time ago and understand that you are safe now, but you still find yourself reacting strongly when something reminds you of the past. Parts and Memory Therapy can help you work with the part of you that is still affected by that experience.

The goal is not to get rid of a part of yourself. Instead, we work with that part and the memory connected to it so that the memory does not continue to affect you in the same way.

  • Have memories that continue to affect how you feel today

  • Find yourself reacting in ways that seem bigger than the situation

  • Know intellectually that you are safe, but still don't feel safe emotionally
